Proposition 43

Limits Voters' Ability to Raise Revenues for Local Government Services

What it says

Currently, local governments must obtain two-thirds voter approval to impose, extend, or increase special taxes they place on the ballot, but this requirement does not apply to special taxes put on the ballot by voter signature gathering. This measure would require voter-proposed local special taxes to also receive two-thirds voter approval (rather than a simple majority) to pass. Applies to voter-proposed ballot measures approved after January 1, 2027. Could result in lower local government tax revenues in the future.
