Accessibility
Knowing who is on your ballot should not depend on how you see, hear, move or read. We want elect.link to work for everyone, and we are always working to make it better.
Our commitment
elect.link aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, which is the standard generally used to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for websites. We treat accessibility problems as bugs, and we keep improving the site as we find and fix them. This is ongoing work, not a box we ticked once.
What we do
- Pages use headings, lists, tables, landmarks and a "Skip to content" link, so assistive technology can find its way around.
- Everything can be used with a keyboard alone, and the element you are on always has a visible focus outline.
- Text and controls meet the WCAG AA contrast ratios, and information is never shown by color alone: party, votes and status always have a text label as well.
- Pages reflow on small screens and when you zoom or enlarge text, without hiding content. Wide tables scroll sideways inside their own box.
- Forms have labels, and errors and status messages are announced to screen readers.
- The search box announces its suggestions and works with the arrow keys.
- If your device is set to reduce motion, the site stops animations and smooth scrolling.
- Links that open a new tab say so, and the state map is also a plain list of links with full names.
How we check
We test with automated accessibility checks (axe-core) across the main pages, and by hand with keyboard navigation, zoom and small screens. We re-check after changes. This statement was last reviewed on October 11, 2026.
Known limits
- Many pages link to sources we do not control, such as government sites, filings and PDF documents. Some of those may not be accessible. If one blocks you, tell us and we will try to find another source or give you the information in another way.
- Candidate pages are built automatically from many sources, so text quality and reading level vary, and new content appears all the time. We check new kinds of content when we add them.
- We have not yet had a full audit by an outside accessibility firm, and there may be issues our checks did not find.
Tell us about a problem
If something on elect.link is hard or impossible for you to use, or you need information in another format, please reach out. We want to hear about it, however small it seems.
Email [email protected] and tell us:
- the web address of the page, or what you were trying to do;
- what went wrong;
- the browser, device and assistive technology you use, if you know them.
We aim to reply within five business days, and we will tell you what we plan to do about it. We read every report and use them to decide what to fix next.
