Susan
M. Collins

Republican incumbent Susan Collins seeks a sixth U.S. Senate term from Maine in 2026

Background

Susan M. Collins is the Republican U.S. Senator from Maine, first elected in 1996 and reelected in 2002, 2008, 2014, and 2020. She was born and raised in Caribou, Maine, graduated from Caribou High School in 1971, and earned her degree from St. Lawrence University in 1975 as a Phi Beta Kappa honoree. She currently serves as chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and resides in Bangor, Maine. 123

Before her Senate career, Collins worked for U.S. Representative and later Senator Bill Cohen, including as staff director of a Senate subcommittee. In 1987, Maine Governor John McKernan appointed her commissioner of the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, and in 1992 President George H.W. Bush appointed her director of a Small Business Administration regional office. She also served as deputy state treasurer in Massachusetts and as founding executive director of the Center for Family Business at Husson College. 14

Collins was the Republican nominee for Maine governor in 1994 but was not elected. She is now seeking a sixth Senate term in the November 3, 2026 general election, facing Democratic challenger Troy Jackson in what polls describe as a close race. 71314
