Before entering Congress, Casten worked as a cancer researcher (1993–95), biofuels researcher (1995–98), and technology consultant (1998–2000). He later served as president and CEO of Turbosteam Corporation and co-founded Recycled Energy Development in 2006, focusing on clean-energy entrepreneurship until 2016. 35

Casten graduated from Middlebury College in 1993 with a B.A. and earned both an M.S. and an M.E.M. from Dartmouth College in 1998. He attended Woodlands High School in Hartsdale, New York. 3
