Background

Paul D. Tonko is the U.S. Representative for New York's 20th Congressional District, first elected in 2008 and sworn in on January 3, 2009. A lifelong resident of Amsterdam, New York, he graduated from Amsterdam High School in 1967 and earned a B.S. in mechanical and industrial engineering from Clarkson University in 1971. 35

Before entering Congress, Tonko worked as a public works engineer and for the New York State Public Service Commission. He served as a member of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors from 1976 to 1983, including as its chair in 1981, and was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1983 to 2007. He also served as president and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). 35

Now serving his ninth term, Tonko is the Democratic incumbent running for re-election in the November 2026 general election for New York's 20th Congressional District. 235
