Background

Mike McGuire is a Democratic politician from Healdsburg, California, running for California's 1st Congressional District in the November 2026 election. He is a third-generation Northern Californian whose family farmed prunes and grapes in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley; he was raised by his mother and grandmother on a small Sonoma County ranch. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Sonoma State University in 2002. 215

McGuire has held elected office since 1998, serving on the Healdsburg School Board, Healdsburg City Council (including a term as mayor), and the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors before winning election to the California State Senate's 2nd District in 2014. He was re-elected in 2018 and 2022. 218

In the State Senate, McGuire rose to become Senate Majority Leader in 2022 and was elected Senate President pro Tempore beginning in February 2024—the most powerful position in the California Legislature's upper chamber.
