Background

Mike DeCillis is the 2026 Democratic nominee for New York's 11th Congressional District (Staten Island and South Brooklyn), challenging Republican incumbent Rep. Nicole Malliotakis. 1279 He is a fourth-generation Staten Islander who has lived in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, for 14 years. 28

DeCillis's background spans emergency services, law enforcement, law, and education. He volunteered as an EMT in college, then worked as a SWAT paramedic and field-training officer in Michigan. He responded at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001, and subsequently served as an NYPD officer for a decade. 179 While on the force, he attended law school and later worked as a civil-litigation attorney. 1

After leaving law enforcement, DeCillis served in the New York State Assembly as chief of staff and director of legislation, completed an AmeriCorps teaching fellowship, and taught special education in New York City's District 75. 12 He holds a degree from Kalamazoo College, a Juris Doctor from New York Law School, and a master's degree in education from Hunter College. 1

DeCillis won the Democratic primary in June 2026 and faces Malliotakis in the November 2026 general election. The FEC classifies him as a challenger with no prior elected office. 912
