E. Gates

Republican Michael E. Gates, former Huntington Beach city attorney and federal DOJ official, is running for California Attorney General in 2026.

Background

Michael E. Gates is a Republican candidate for California Attorney General in 2026. A lifelong Californian residing in Huntington Beach, he earned a B.S. in Business Administration and Management from Pepperdine University and a J.D. from Chapman University School of Law. 2512

Before entering elected office, Gates worked as a litigator and trial attorney in private practice, defending police officers and medical doctors, and became a partner at an Orange County law firm. In 2014 he was elected Huntington Beach city attorney, a position he was re-elected to in 2018 and 2022, serving approximately ten years. 16

In 2025, Gates was appointed Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division. A local voter guide updated in October 2026 describes his occupation as "Deputy United States Attorney," though sources do not clarify whether he still holds the federal position while campaigning for state office. 16179

Gates is running against the incumbent Democratic Attorney General and has centered his campaign on public safety, crime enforcement, and constitutional issues. He identifies as the only attorney general candidate who has made in-person visits to locations such as Skid Row. 826
