Maxine E. Dexter, M.D., is the Democratic incumbent U.S. Representative for Oregon's 3rd Congressional District, first sworn in January 2025.

Background

Maxine E. Dexter is a Democrat representing Oregon's 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. She was elected in 2024 and sworn in on January 3, 2025, succeeding her prior role as an Oregon state representative for House District 33, a position she held from 2020 until her resignation effective August 31, 2024. 123

Before entering politics, Dexter practiced lung and critical-care medicine at Kaiser Permanente for more than 15 years. She was elected to serve her physician group and became the first woman to chair the board of directors at Northwest Permanente. 1

Dexter earned a bachelor's degree in political science and communications from the University of Washington and attended its School of Medicine. She grew up in the Pacific Northwest; a congressional directory lists Portland as her hometown. 118
