Background

Lauren Underwood is a Democratic U.S. Representative for Illinois's 14th Congressional District, first sworn into office on January 3, 2019. She was born in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, and grew up in Naperville, Illinois, where she currently resides. 12

Underwood earned a B.S.N. from the University of Michigan (2008) and an M.S.N./M.P.H. from Johns Hopkins University (2009). Before running for Congress, she worked as a nurse, served as a senior advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 2014 to 2017, helped implement the Affordable Care Act, and taught future nurse practitioners through Georgetown University's online master's program. 12

She has been elected to four successive Congresses beginning with the 116th, representing Illinois's 14th District each time. She is running for re-election in the November 3, 2026 general election. 278
