Texas AG Ken Paxton is the 2026 Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Texas, having defeated incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the primary runoff.

Background

Ken Paxton is the 51st Attorney General of Texas, first elected to that office in 2014 and re-elected in 2018 and 2022. Before becoming attorney general, he represented House District 70 in the Texas House for ten years beginning in 2002, then served in the Texas Senate representing District 8 after his 2012 election. 12

Paxton earned a B.A. in psychology and an M.B.A. from Baylor University, where he served as student body president, and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. Prior to entering politics, he worked at Strasburger & Price, as in-house counsel for J.C. Penney Company, and ran his own law firm in McKinney, Texas for 14 years. 1

In May 2026, Paxton defeated incumbent U.S. Senator John Cornyn in the Republican primary runoff, earning the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in the November 3, 2026 general election. His campaign was backed by former President Donald Trump. 161719

Paxton is based in McKinney, Texas, which the Texas Tribune has described as a base of his political career. 10
