Kathy
C. Hochul

Kathy Hochul, incumbent Democratic Governor of New York, is seeking reelection in November 2026.

Background

Kathy C. Hochul is the incumbent Governor of New York, having taken office in August 2021 after the resignation of Andrew Cuomo. She was born and raised in Buffalo, New York, graduated from Syracuse University in 1980, and earned her law degree from Catholic University in 1983. Before entering elected office, she worked as a lawyer, as an aide to U.S. Representative John LaFalce and Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and as a lobbyist for small-business groups. 125

Hochul's elected career spans several decades. She served on the Hamburg Town Board beginning in 1994 for about 12 years, was elected Erie County Clerk in 2007, and won a special election in 2011 to represent New York's 26th Congressional District in the U.S. House, serving until 2013. She then served as New York's Lieutenant Governor from 2015 until becoming governor in 2021. 25

As governor, Hochul is the Democratic nominee for the November 3, 2026 gubernatorial election, seeking her second full term. She had raised approximately $14 million for her reelection campaign as of late September 2026. 101417

Hochul's official state biography describes her focus on issues including public safety, the economy, and access to services for New Yorkers. 2
