Jonathan
Nez

Former Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez is the 2026 Democratic nominee for Arizona's 2nd Congressional District.

Background

Jonathan Nez is a Democrat running for Arizona's 2nd Congressional District seat in the November 2026 election, challenging Republican incumbent Eli Crane. 67 He was born in Tuba City, Arizona, and raised in Shonto, Arizona. 26

Nez served as President of the Navajo Nation from 2019 to 2023, having previously served as Navajo Nation Vice President from 2015 to 2019. 26 Before those roles, he served two terms on the Navajo County Board of Supervisors (District 1), three terms as a Navajo Nation Council delegate representing Shonto, Oljato, Tsah Bi Kin, and Navajo Mountain, and as Vice President of the Shonto Chapter. 2

Nez is an alumnus of Northland Pioneer College and Northern Arizona University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a Master of Public Administration. As of a 2022 House-hosted biography, he was also a doctoral student in political science; the available sources do not confirm whether he has since completed a doctorate. 2 He and his wife lead Nez Consulting, LLC, which provides strategic planning, organizational development, facilitation, and advisory services. 1426

Nez was named to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's "Red to Blue" program and announced as the official Democratic nominee for Arizona's 2nd Congressional District on July 22, 2026. 31723
