Republican Joe Mitchell, former Iowa state representative, seeks Iowa's 2nd Congressional District seat in 2026

Background

Joe Mitchell is the Republican candidate for Iowa's 2nd Congressional District in the November 3, 2026 general election, challenging for the open seat held by Rep. Ashley Hinson. He resides in Clear Lake, Iowa, and was born and raised in a small town just south of Cedar Rapids. [7, 8, 11]

Mitchell previously served two terms as a Republican state representative for Iowa House District 84, in the 88th and 89th General Assemblies (2019–2023). Before his legislative service, he worked as a public-relations director at MD Orthopaedics. [14, 15, 16]

He later served in the Trump administration as a regional director at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and as chief of staff at the Federal Housing Finance Agency. 11 He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Drake University and is a WACO High School graduate. 15

Mitchell currently works as a housing developer focused on workforce housing through J. Mitchell Real Estate, LLC, which owns rental properties and develops multifamily housing. [11, 16]
