Kim

Democrat Jane Kim, former SF Supervisor and civil-rights attorney, is running for California Insurance Commissioner in 2026.

Background

Jane Kim is a Democratic candidate for California Insurance Commissioner in the November 3, 2026 general election. A civil-rights attorney and consumer advocate based in San Francisco, she announced her candidacy on January 21, 2026, and received the endorsement of Senator Bernie Sanders. 127

Kim previously served on the San Francisco Board of Education (2007–2011), including as its president, and on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (2011–2019). Before and between those roles she worked as a community organizer at Chinatown Community Development Center and as a civil-rights attorney at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights. 317

After leaving the Board of Supervisors, Kim served as California political director for Bernie Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign, as a senior fellow at the Sanders Institute and Young Elected Officials Network, and as California director of the Working Families Party. Her October 2026 candidate questionnaire describes her as a former California director of the party. 319

Kim holds a B.A. from Stanford University and a J.D. from UC Berkeley School of Law. She is not the incumbent; the race is an open seat contest. 310
