Background
Houston Gaines is a Republican member of the Georgia House of Representatives representing District 120, where he has served since 2019 and currently holds the position of Majority Caucus Vice-Chairman. He was born and raised in Athens, Georgia, where he still resides, and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Georgia with B.A. degrees in Economics and Political Science, having also served as student body president. 191112
Before entering politics, Gaines worked at Cannon Financial Institute serving clients in the financial industry, and his campaign biography describes his career as helping grow small businesses; he currently works with Carter Engineering in Oconee County. He was first elected to the Georgia State House in 2018, initially representing District 117 before moving to District 120. 19
In 2026, Gaines is running as the Republican candidate for Georgia's 10th Congressional District U.S. House seat. The seat became open after incumbent U.S. Representative Mike Collins announced a bid for U.S. Senate. Gaines is therefore not the incumbent for the federal seat he is seeking. 278
