Helena
Buonanno Foulkes

Rhode Island businesswoman and 2026 Democratic gubernatorial nominee who defeated incumbent Gov. Dan McKee in the primary

Background

Helena Buonanno Foulkes is a Rhode Island-born business executive and Democratic politician who grew up on Providence's East Side and describes herself as a lifelong Rhode Islander. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1986 and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1992. 7

Foulkes spent 25 years at CVS, rising to executive vice president and president of CVS Pharmacy, before serving as CEO of Hudson's Bay Company until 2020. She has no prior elected public office. 7

She first ran for Rhode Island governor in the 2022 Democratic primary, finishing second, then launched a second campaign in 2026. On September 9, 2026, she defeated incumbent Governor Dan McKee in the Democratic primary with 60.67% of the vote, a rare primary defeat of a sitting Rhode Island governor. [10, 3, 12]

Foulkes is now the Democratic nominee for governor ahead of the November 3, 2026 general election. Incumbent Dan McKee remains in office until January 2027. [10, 13]
