Background

Gregory W. Meeks is a Democratic U.S. Representative serving New York's 5th Congressional District. Born and raised in East Harlem, New York, he grew up in public housing and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in history from Adelphi University (1975) and a J.D. from Howard University (1978). 12

Before entering elected office, Meeks served as a Queens County assistant district attorney (1978–1983), an assistant special narcotics prosecutor, and a supervising judge in New York State's workers' compensation system (1985–1992). He served in the New York State Assembly from 1992 to 1998, then won a 1998 special election to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he has served continuously since. 12

In the House, Meeks serves on the Foreign Affairs and Financial Services committees and holds the position of ranking member on the Foreign Affairs Committee. 15 He is the incumbent Democratic candidate for the NY-5 seat in the November 2026 general election. 9
