Hinojosa

Texas state representative and Democratic nominee challenging Gov. Greg Abbott for Texas governor in 2026

Background

Gina Hinojosa is a Texas Democratic politician representing District 49 in the Texas House of Representatives, a seat she has held since January 2017 after first being elected in 2016. 125 Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley and educated in Brownsville public schools, she later graduated from the University of Texas and earned her law degree from George Washington University. 2 Before entering electoral politics, she worked as a civil-rights and labor lawyer advocating for workers and families. 12

Prior to her legislative service, Hinojosa was elected to the Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees in November 2012 and was elected board president by fellow trustees in January 2015, later stepping down as president in December 2015 while remaining a trustee. 12 She has represented the central Austin district in the Texas House since 2017. 125

In the 2026 election cycle, Hinojosa entered the race for Texas governor as the Democratic nominee, challenging incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. Coverage noted she could become Texas' first Latina governor if elected. 45 Her campaign has focused on issues including reproductive freedom, economic affordability, and civil rights. 827
