Background

Fiona Ma, CPA, is California's 34th State Treasurer, a position she has held since 2019 after being elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022. 12 Before serving as treasurer, she held seats on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (2002–2006), the California State Assembly (2006–2012), and the California State Board of Equalization (2015–2019). 23

Ma grew up in Great Neck, Long Island, and moved to San Francisco in 1985. She earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Rochester Institute of Technology, a master's degree in taxation from Golden Gate University, and an MBA from Pepperdine University. She has been a licensed California CPA since 1992 and worked at Ernst & Young from 1989 to 1993 before opening her own accounting practice in San Francisco. 216

In the November 3, 2026, general election, Ma is the Democratic candidate for California Lieutenant Governor, running against Republican opponent Romero. She received the endorsement of the California Democratic Party and the support of a supermajority of state legislators and several constitutional officers. 7811 The seat is currently held by incumbent Eleni Kounalakis; Ma is not the incumbent in this race. 17
