Edward
J. Markey

Democratic U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, incumbent since 2013, seeking re-election in November 2026

Background

Edward J. Markey is a Democratic U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, first elected in a 2013 special election and sworn in on July 16, 2013 by Vice President Biden. 116 Born and raised in Malden, Massachusetts, he earned a B.A. from Boston College in 1968 and a J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1972, and served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1968 to 1973 before practicing law privately. 113

Markey served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1973 to 1976, then represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1976 to 2013—one of the longest tenures in House history before his transition to the Senate. 13 In the Senate he has been associated with climate, technology, and telecommunications policy. 12

Markey won the Democratic primary for his Senate seat on September 1, 2026, defeating Rep. Seth Moulton, as projected by the Associated Press. 1012 He is the Democratic incumbent seeking re-election in the November 3, 2026 general election. 36
