Background

Deb Haaland is a Democratic politician from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the 2026 Democratic nominee for governor of New Mexico. 2 Born in Winslow, Arizona, she earned a B.A. in English from the University of New Mexico in 1994 and a J.D. in Indian law from the University of New Mexico in 2006. [9, 10]

Before entering electoral politics, Haaland ran a small business producing and canning Pueblo salsa, served as a tribal administrator at San Felipe Pueblo from 2013 to 2015, and served on the Laguna Development Corporation board. She chaired the Democratic Party of New Mexico from 2015 to 2017. [9, 12]

Haaland represented New Mexico's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 3, 2019 to March 16, 2021, and subsequently served as U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 2021 to 2025. [10, 8] She is one of the first Native American women to serve in Congress and the first to serve as a Cabinet secretary. 11

Haaland won the Democratic primary for governor on June 3, 2026, and is running in the November 3, 2026 general election. 2 Former President Barack Obama endorsed her candidacy in October 2026. 17
