Background
David Hatley is an independent candidate for governor of Tennessee in 2026. Born and raised in Elizabethton, Carter County, Tennessee, he has no prior elected office experience and no college degree, according to his campaign press kit. 3414
Hatley describes himself as a lifelong entrepreneur, saying he started his first business at age 12 and opened his first retail store at 18. His campaign states he went on to found nine Tennessee companies—including Whisper Outdoor and LPI—spanning manufacturing and other sectors, and that his businesses have created more than 750 jobs in the state. 414
Running as an independent, Hatley formally launched his campaign in 2026 and has framed his candidacy as an alternative to both major parties. The Nashville Banner and the Chattanooga Times Free Press noted his lack of political experience and described him as one of several independent candidates seeking the open governorship left by term-limited incumbent Bill Lee. 1214
Hatley has campaigned across Tennessee and released a campaign book and press kit. Commentary in The Tennessean and elsewhere has questioned whether independent candidates can win statewide in Tennessee, though observers have noted he may draw attention from voters dissatisfied with both parties. 189
