Background

Darializa Avila Chevalier is a Dominican New Yorker who spent parts of her childhood in the Dominican Republic and Florida before moving uptown to attend Columbia University. 1 She is currently a Ph.D. student at the City University of New York (CUNY), where her research examines how the U.S. immigration system criminalizes Black immigrants from Latin America, and works as an investigator at Neighborhood Defender Services of Harlem. 122

Before her congressional run, Chevalier worked with Families for Freedom on immigration detention and family-separation cases and taught college courses at CUNY Lehman, Columbia, and NYU. 1 She holds no prior elected office.

In June 2026, Chevalier won the Democratic primary for New York's 13th Congressional District, defeating incumbent Adriano Espaillat with the backing of NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America. 1914 She is the Democratic nominee in the November 2026 general election for that seat. 12
