Background
Dan Ahlers is the 2026 Democratic nominee for Governor of South Dakota, running against incumbent Republican Larry Rhoden in the November 3 general election. He won the uncontested Democratic primary, and the South Dakota Secretary of State confirmed his petition qualified for the ballot in May 2026. 1014
Ahlers is from Dell Rapids, South Dakota, and currently serves as executive director of the South Dakota Democratic Party. 216 He previously served three terms in the South Dakota Legislature representing District 25 — as a state representative in 2007–08, state senator in 2009–10, and state representative again in 2017–18. 34
Before entering politics, Ahlers opened a video-rental store in Dell Rapids in 1999 and ran the business for roughly 20 years. He also worked as a substitute teacher, led Dell Rapids' before- and after-school program, and was involved with the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce. 4 He graduated from Augustana University in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in government and international relations. 4
His 2026 gubernatorial campaign has focused on issues including health care and housing. 4 Ahlers debated Republican nominee Larry Rhoden in September 2026 and has framed his candidacy around winning uphill electoral battles in a state that has trended heavily Republican. 218
