Chellie
Pingree

Democratic U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree has served Maine's 1st Congressional District since 2009 and is seeking reelection in 2026.

Background

Chellie Pingree is the U.S. Representative for Maine's 1st Congressional District, a seat she has held since January 2009. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she moved to Maine as a teenager and has lived on North Haven island ever since. She earned a B.A. from the College of the Atlantic in 1979. 13

Before entering Congress, Pingree built a career rooted in organic farming, small-business ownership, and civic service. She and her husband ran a small farm after college, founded North Island Yarn in 1981 (later expanded into North Island Designs), and co-founded Nebo Lodge, a North Haven bed-and-breakfast and restaurant, in 2006. She also served as president and CEO of the national civic organization Common Cause from 2003 to 2007. 1

Pingree's political career began locally, with service on North Haven's school board, planning board (1981–1991), and as town tax assessor. She was elected to the Maine Senate in 1992 and served four terms through 2000, including as Senate Majority Leader from 1996 to 2000. 12

In Congress, Pingree has been a consistent advocate for agriculture, food policy, and progressive causes. She is running for reelection to represent Maine's 1st District in November 2026. 12
