Taylor has a long record of local elected service. He was first elected to the Memphis City Council in 1995, reelected in 1999 and 2003, and left the council in 2007. He was subsequently appointed to the Shelby County Commission in October 2011 to fill a vacancy and also served on the Shelby County Election Commission, including as chair. 2)2213

Before entering politics full-time, Taylor worked as a funeral director. He and his wife purchased their first funeral home in 2004 and expanded the business; he is listed as a former president and CEO of Brentwood Funeral Services. He studied mortuary science at Northwest Mississippi Community College. 113

Taylor's campaign describes him as having been born and raised in a rural community; he and his wife currently reside in Eads, Tennessee. He is not the incumbent U.S. representative for the 9th District, as that seat is being contested under a redrawn map. 1312
