Alma S. Adams, Ph.D., is a Democratic U.S. Representative serving North Carolina's 12th Congressional District. She first entered Congress after winning a special election in 2014 and was elected to a sixth full term in 2024, currently serving in the 119th Congress. 158

Born in High Point, North Carolina, Adams earned a B.S. and M.S. from North Carolina A&T State University (1968, 1972) and a Ph.D. in art education and multicultural education from Ohio State University (1981). She taught art at Bennett College in Greensboro for approximately 40 years, from 1972 to 2012. 256

Before her congressional career, Adams served on the Greensboro school board (1984–1986), the Greensboro City Council (1987–1994), and the North Carolina House of Representatives (1994–2014), where she was initially appointed to her seat. 1517

In Congress, Adams has been active on committees including the House Agriculture Committee and the House Education and Workforce Committee, and has championed issues such as public health, education funding, and community safety. 101114
